Bilqis is the fabled Queen of Sheba, an ancient kingdom purportedly stemming from current Yemen. A queen known throughout the peninsula for her beauty and power. Her prominence and prestige attracted the attention of the greatest King of the then known world- Solomon.
When we first discussed the distillation of this oil with its creator our brief was to come up with something that would be extremely pretty. Not cloyingly sweet, devoid of character but an oil which celebrates beauty. Initial inclination was to go for a Crassna oil however he informed us that he was able to get hold of some good incense grade Beccariana wood from Eastern Malaysia. After agreeing some cooking parameters etc we decided that we’d meet in Malaysia to sample the oil.
The oil opens with a lovely spritz of green forest pine, morphing quickly into a sweet camphor, a smooth opening a nod to its woody origin. After this the transformation is strange and wonderful, juicy berries now come into play. Strawberry, blackberries picked in early autumn, ripe plums and hints of caramel. As it ages on your skin a subtle incense woodiness appears which drifts in and out for the next few hours. A beautiful oil which remains close to the skin, definitely a great oil for the fairer sex and an intro into the world of oud.
